Remote education provision: information for parents
This information is intended to provide clarity and transparency to pupils and parents or carers about what to expect from remote education where national or local restrictions require entire cohorts (or bubbles) to remain at home. This information is also relevant to members of our Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities who travel for work as part of their cultural heritage. Will my child be taught broadly the same curriculum as they would if they were in school?
We teach the same curriculum remotely as we do in school wherever it is possible and appropriate to do so. However, we may need to make some adaptations in some subjects. For example, in maths we may focus on consolidating the key skills the children need to embed before starting a new area of learning such as place value.
How long can I expect work set by the school to take my child each day?
We expect that remote education (including remote teaching and independent work) will take pupils broadly the following number of hours each day. Please note that the expectation is that, wherever possible, children join the 3 live lessons each day, complete the phonics sessions and utilise apps available on Wonde to complete independent tasks such as reading and times table practise. We use Google as our online platform for live lessons and ClassDojo for sharing all other learning for children in Key Stage 1 and 2 and Tapestry for children in Nursery and Reception.

| Children unable to access online learning | All children will receive paper packs of work on request. A new pack can be requested every 2 weeks. Children can submit work to teachers by posting back to school or by placing it in the school post box at the top of the school drive. Please place work in a sealed envelope. Please contact the school office if you are unable to access online learning. We will provide laptops, Chromebooks and internet dongles wherever possible. Our IT technician is also on hand to give you support with accessing online platforms and lessons so please contact us with any technology issues and we will do our utmost to help. |
Engagement and feedback
What are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents and carers should provide at home?
Our expectation is that children attend the live lessons provided daily. In nursery, complete the three shared activities, as well as completing the phonics learning that is shared, where applicable, and read daily.
We understand that it is not always easy to complete all of the set work, especially if parents are also working or there are multiple children in the house. This is why we have also provided links to online learning that can be accessed at any time.
We do not want anyone to become anxious about completing all of the work. Please remember that anything you do is a bonus. Activities such as reading to your child, playing with them, cooking and going on walks are all great experiences. Please contact the school or your child’s class teacher with any concerns or queries.
How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns?
We will be keeping a log of when we have contact from children either via ClassDojo / Tapestry or live lessons. We will call families when we have not had contact from a child over the course of a week.
Teachers will contact parents, either via telephone or ClassDojo if they have any concerns. Parents can also contact the class teacher via ClassDojo / Tapestry if they have any queries regarding learning.
How will you assess my child’s work and progress?
Feedback can take many forms and may not always mean extensive written comments for individual children. For example, whole-class feedback or quizzes marked automatically via digital platforms are also valid and effective methods, amongst many others. Our approach to feeding back on pupil work is as follows:
Children receive live feedback during our live online lessons. Teachers will use a range of strategies, similar to those they use during classroom teaching. They may also use online platforms such as Learning by Questions.
All work that children submit via ClassDojo or Tapestry will be acknowledged by the class teacher and feedback will be given as appropriate. For example, it may not be necessary for the teacher to give feedback if a child has shared photos of them baking at home, whereas they would require feedback if they had submitted a picture of a plant labelled incorrectly.
How will you work with me to help my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education?
We recognise that some pupils, for example some pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families, and we will work with parents and carers to support those pupils in the following ways:
- Children who have EHCP or complex needs are able to attend school if safe to do so.
- Our Pupil Needs Mentor works closely with families, putting together work schedules for lessons to support parents so that they can guide the child through the lesson.
- Most live lessons have a learning support assistant present, as well as the teacher, who can work with individuals using the chat function. The use of live lessons also allows the teacher to respond ‘in the moment’ to pupils and differentiate their teaching accordingly.
- Teacher knowledge of the children enables them to design and deliver live lessons which are pitched appropriately and have the appropriate level of scaffolding.
- We are developing online Speech and Language sessions for key children.
If my child is not in school because they are self-isolating, how will their remote education differ from the approaches described above?
If the school is shut, due to a national lockdown, all children self-isolating can access the same home-learning offer as all other children.
Where individual pupils need to self-isolate but the majority of their peer group remains in school, how remote education is provided will likely differ from the approach for whole groups. This is due to the challenges of teaching pupils both at home and in school.
If the school is open and your child is self-isolating, they will receive home learning links, via Class Dojo, on their first day of isolation. If they are in Nursery or Reception they will receive these links via tapestry. A pack of work can also be requested from the school office.
If we have teachers working from home, we will also endeavour to provide children with a number of live lessons throughout the week.
